SAC releases budget request forms

The Martingrove Student Administrative Council has released its Budget Request Forms after being asked to do so by the Martingrove Free Press.
"The Student Administrative Council feels that the money was distributed in a fair and equitable manner," said treasurer Phillip Lee after releasing the forms on Tuesday, October 29th, within 24 hours of the initial request.
In order to receive funding from the SAC, each Martingrove Club must complete a Budget Request Form on which they outline their club history, membership, executive, and planned events. "One time costs, club history, and registration costs are all factors," explained Lee when asked about the criteria used for distribution.

"I believe this marks the beginning of a new era of transparency within the Martingrove SAC," commented MFP editor Alex Thomson after receiving the forms.

The SAC Budget had been released to the general public on Wednesday, October 23rd. However, this only included the final amounts distributed to each organization, not the requested amounts or the justification for each of the requests.

This budget follows a turbulent year for the SAC. Early in 2001, many members of the executive were forced to resign after being caught stealing SAC cards. The release of the budget request forms is an unprecedented action - likely a part the of ongoing SAC effort to improve its image.

A total of $30,955.00 was requested by Martingrove clubs and athletics; $25,700.00 was distributed. While the treasurer plays a central role in the formulation of the budget, the SAC core executive, staff advisors, and the administration all take part in the decision. The SAC staff advisors include Ms. Kite, Mr. Finucan and Ms. MacKinnon.

Surprisingly, five clubs actually received more than they requested. In the case of the Martingrove Debate and Oratory Society, who submitted a budget of $3140.00 and requested that the SAC provide 25%, this was logical as the increased funding simply meant the SAC was subsidizing 32%. For the other organizations, no reason was given for this unexpected generosity.

Lee also emphasized that strong SAC card sales had resulted in the largest SAC budget ever and that he was "pleased to be able to give such large amounts to the diversity of organizations at MCI."
