Network cables: not a fire hazard at Martingrove C.I.

Random checks have revealed that the network cables at Martingrove CI are generally of the correct fire rating.

According to Article 3.5.4.3 of the Ontario Building Code, cables installed in any plenum (air duct) must be of an FT6 rating meaning that they do not produce too much smoke should they catch on fire. Smoke production is an important factor because, in the case of a fire, the smoke could be transported via the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Condition (HVAC) system and distributed throughout the school - an obviously undesirable scenario.

Initial inspections showed that all cables installed above the ceiling tiles were rated at the FT6 level, however, upon closer examination it was discovered that several cables were rated at the FT4 level. The FT4 rating indicates that the cable is not appropriate for plenum use as too much smoke is generated upon combustion.

However, it was later determined by the MFP that the area above the ceiling tiles in the hallway or in the classrooms is not used as a ventilation duct. Therefore, the use of FT6 plenum cable it is not necessary or required.

In a school with as few windows as Martingrove, compliance to this regulation is especially important as the ventilation system is the only source of fresh air - in a fire situation, a room could easily fill with smoke making evacuation very difficult.
