Another year, and yet another job action by the members
of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF).
Many would argue that the OSSTF should not be jeopardizing
so many graduating students in the crucial year of the double
cohort.
According to the OSSTF, they and the Toronto District School
Board (TDSB) are still in disagreement on issues such as
salary, workload, the sick leave gratuity, benefits, and
the Positions of Responsibility Model.
A work-to-rule job action is the best solution for the
OSSTF in this situation, without compromising their own
position. Without a job action, the OSSTF would have little
leverage in negotiations against the TDSB. The alternative,
a strike, would be no better since the OSSTF would alienate
the parents of students, a key supporting group of the OSSTF.
Although extracurricular activities may be affected, the
most important part of school, academics, still remain intact.
This is especially important in a year in which two classes
are graduating simultaneously. If the OSSTF had chosen a
strike, it could be detrimental to students applying to
post-secondary institutions.
The OSSTF has made the right decision by choosing a work-to-rule
rather than a strike, saving the academic year for students,
without compromising their own position.
